Green Production Hall Železný
Do you know what an ordinary production hall and its surroundings look like? Hot in summers, cold in winters and the water flows away somewhere. The Železný production hall near Prague where kayaks are made, looks completely different. The roof is formed by arches and between them there are houseleeks in blossom. Together with the potting soil, they retain rainwater and maintain a stable temperature in the building. The water surface is mirrored at the entrance and flowers are growing nearby in the reed bed water treatment system (constructed wetland). It prepares graywater from the hall to be used for flushing the toilets.

What the measure addresses
Železný's production hall plays its part in slowing down rainwater run-off and water retention. The water that evaporates from the roof, water tank and reed bed treatment system cools down the microclimate of its surroundings. Moreover, the water tank is the only body of water around and is therefore a place of rescue for wetland plants and aquatic animals, especially dragonflies. There are also fish there.
How it works
The green roof of the production hall covers an area of 500 square meters. It is covered by soil and drought-tolerant low-maintenance plants. The green roof retains rainwater and the excess water flows into the water tank by the entrance.
The water tank has an area of 250 square meters and retains, evaporates and slowly seeps the water into the ground. There are wetland plant species growing in it which help with the cleaning process. The graywater from the hall enters a system of underground tanks and then the reed bed treatment plant. After the treatment it is used to flush the toilets.
The place where the production hall was built used to be a field intended for further development of the industrial site. Although the plot was used for building a production hall, it managed to enrich its surroundings with bodies of water as well as flowerbeds. There are other industrial buildings and fields around the hall and some woods further away.
Future maintenance cost will include the cost of regular mowing of the plants in the reed bed water treatment plant and planting houseleeks on the roof, as well as cleaning the water tank by the entrance and the water treatment plant. In the last five years, this has had to be done only once.
Operation and maintenance experience
Due to strong wind during thunderstorms in the first year after the construction, the soil from one of the corners of the roof flew away a couple of times. To solve this, a part of the roof got covered with tiles and a coconut mat was added that holds the soil and houseleeks in place.
Compared to standard solutions the consumption of drinking water is reduced by 50 %.
How much it cost
Compared to a construction of a conventional production hall, the cost of the building was about 10 % higher. It was funded by the company’s own resources and by the Operational Program Enterprise and Innovation (OPEI). The expected lifetime of the measure is 50 years.
