Revitalization of the Inland Water Area in Nyárád

Honourable mention in the Adapterra Awards 2019

The village of Nyárád in Hungary is a beautiful example of what three lakes and a willow plantation can do with a dangerous wetland. By redesigning the inland water area, nearby homes are no longer under the threat of floods from heavy rainfalls and a natural habitat for plants and animals was created. All giving the opportunity for locals to use again previously lost gardens for growing BIO foods.

The Adaptation Journey

The positive impact
The inland water hazard has been completely eliminated, and nearby residential homes are not threatened by any major rainfall.

Thanks to an application in 2006 all the buildings of the settlement were equipped with solar system. This way the power supply can be provided completely by natural energy.

Several species found their home in the area of the lakes and the management pays close attention to their protection. Beside the lakes, there is a natural trail, which is free for use for those who want to rest. Moreover, there are several entertainment facilities in the area. The social institutions and kindergarten kitchen of the town became almost self-sufficient.
How does it work?
Three lakes were created in the area and local uncared gardens were restored, catering with self produced BIO foods.

An energy willow plantation was installed. This aimed to help to solve the problems of the inland water area, and with it the gas usage could be decreased to minimum as well by using the harvested willow for heating the public buildings. Thanks to the solar system the energy bills have decreased significantly. The power supply of all public institutions can be provided by paying only the basic fee.

BIO plants have been cultivated and sold in the settlement for years. The vegetables and fruit that are grown locally are used in the social kitchen, providing the meals for the kindergarten children and the elderly. BIO products are served for the kindergarten children in almost all seasons.
Original state
A wetland threatened surrounding houses with its excess of water especially after rainfall.

The amount of water accumulated on the area during the rainy season endangered the neighboring houses and it made the cultivating of the bordering plow land more difficult. The annual precipitation in the area of Nyárád is 600-800 mm.
Operation and maintenance
The maintenance of lakes does not need extra cost involvement. The smaller maintenance and cleaning tasks are provided by the council, as for example mowing the lawn, maintenance of the houses and seatings. The maintenance costs per year are under 150.000 HUF.

By re-investing revenue and leveraging current application opportunities, future expenses can be minimized.
Why was the measure chosen?
Inland water has put increasing pressure on people living in the area. This made immediate measures necessary. Without disturbing the habitat of the fauna. Own products are produced with the involvement of disadvantaged residents.
Obstacles and challenges
The unpredictability of the weather.

In the future, shortage of labor may cause difficulties.
How much did it cost?
The overal costs were 50.000.000 HUF and the return of the investment is estimated to be 5-10 years.
